It replaced a mix of other infantry arms, including the Dreyse and the Werndl rifles. The single-shot bolt-action Model 1871 was Mauser's first commercial success, being adopted by the Prussian Army in March of 1872, and by 1877 the armies of all the other component states of the German Empire had followed suit.
